PULAU SEMAKAU
To create the required landfill space to encompass 350ha and with a capacity for 63 million cubic metres , a 7km perimeter rock bund was built to enclose a part of the sea off Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng. The previous landfill at Lorong Halus (230 ha) was already filled to capacity in 1998. Incinerated ash and non-incinerable refuse will now end up in the Pulau Semakau landfill which began operations in 1999 and is expected to last up till 2040.
Mangrove trees were replanted to replace those removed during the construction phase. Recently opened to visitors; one can view the mangrove forests, sand and mudflats, seagrass lagoon and coral reefs.
